Design Porn

Sajan

This article is going to set the Designwala Site statistics on fire. That is the power of the word ‘Porn’. But if you are a reader who expects to read about the Design revolutions taking place in the porn industry (savita bhabhi and 3d porn to name a few), I am sorry but that is not what this article is about.

What is ‘Design Porn’ then? How is it different from regular porn, you might wonder?

A few days ago, one of the interns at work who was ideating on a cosmetic project came up to me with his laptop. He showed me an image of something that vaguely resembled a balloon poodle and asked, ‘Can this bottle be manufactured?’

I stared at the 3d rendered image of an absolutely unmanufacturable product. Being high on engineer’s juice at that moment, I quickly decided to put this guy in place and bring his focus back on track before his mind wanders off into a fantasy world.

‘No’ I replied. ‘There is no freaking way that anything like this can be mass manufactured’ I added.

‘I figured’ he chuckled.

And then, in a moment of enlightened bliss I decided to impart some very sound advice:

‘Design Concepts such as these are like porn’ I said ‘They should be used only for stimulation. Look at them, ogle at them, even dream about them but don’t expect them to be part of your life in the real world!’ I snickered.

He trudged off silently, holding a blank sheet of paper and a perfectly cylindrical shampoo bottle.

I resumed my work, feeling contented at having saved a budding designer from the gates of Design Porn addiction.

But it took me less than ten minutes to realize my folly. Maybe I was a little too arrogant that day to compare futuristic concepts and brilliant ideas by many people to Porn? After all, Design is such a continuously evolving process right? So who was I to cap the creative outflow of anybody under the pretext of logic? After all, if somebody drew an iphone a hundred years back and claimed it to do all it does now, many would have dismissed it as Design Porn! But yet, it is a real product in today’s world. So are the space shuttles and the robots. They were all products born out of many people’s fantasies. It is a combined effort of dreamers over a period of time who kept their burning desire for something unachievable. After all, today’s ‘Design Porn’ is tomorrows ‘Funky Gadget’.

As a Designer, it is very important to fantasize and wish for something knowing very well it will probably never be achieved by you personally. But that shouldn’t deter you from dreaming. It is that desire which transforms an ordinary man into a designer and it is an unrelenting pursuit to push boundaries and pluck something out of the fantasy world into reality that makes you a good Designer.

A word of caution however for Designers must be the fact that in the pursuit of the unachievable, do not lose focus on what you actually can achieve. After all, the endless stairway to the fantasy world is littered with precious pieces of the very world you want to reach. Pick them up as you go!

Now go and watch some ‘Porn’!
